Writing Blankets is both a condensation and an elaboration on the Vessel series.
Whereas the Vessels depict a metaphorical shape that pertains to the relation between the reproductive value of the female form and reproduction techniques for defining use-value in art and commerce, Writing Blankets is an embellishment of self-contained pictorial language. This language is an iteration of a particular model, based on a pattern, to visualize something in painting that cannot be directly observed or explained.
The meditative process of ‘writing paintings’ explicates concepts that inform my work without reverting to words. All color has been reduced to black and white and gray to elicit a claim for ‘reading paintings’ and to differentiate between seductive and subtle modes of visual literacy. The Writing Blankets, which are a commentary on minimalism, pattern and decoration, and conceptual art, investigate the discrepancy between graphic descriptions and what they represent.
